  1. Question: Can creativity be measured? I don't know if my people have what it takes to make our team more creative.
    Answer:

Yes it can, and perhaps in more ways than you are imagining. Early creativity researchers developed metrics for amount of creativity. Later they turned their attention to assessing type of creativity (or creative style).

One widely accepted assessment for level of creativity is the Torrence Test for Creative Thinking (TTCT). It measures:

    • Fluency (the quantity of ideas one can generate)
    • Flexibility (the variety of idea types)
    • Originality (the novelty of ideas)
    • Elaboration (the depth of each idea)
    • and Resistance to closure (this is a type of openminded-ness)

An assessment that measures type of creative style is the Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory (KAI). Dr. Kirton’s assessment places individuals on a spectrum between Adaptive Creativity (prefers to make continuous incremental improvements) and Innovative Creativity (prefers to challenge underlying assumptions and make grand changes).

KAI has been used for many studies on employee satisfaction and positive correlations have been discovered between employee satisfaction and job role depending on KAI score (For example: people who tend to be happy in Management roles score within a specific range on the KAI. People outside that range experience much lower job satisfaction.)

Don’t worry. Your team probably has what it takes. You may need to shuffle around their roles a little and help them develop their creative talents a bit, but with a just a little effort you’ll see a dramatic increase in their abilities and the whole team’s creative output.
